Out and about around Murcia
separadorCulturalseparador

There are a variety of interesting places to visit in the outskirts of Murcia. In Alcantarilla's Museum of the Huerta (the generic term for the fields and orchards that surround Murcia) you can find out about what life was like in the typical rural cottages known as barracas and see one of the water-wheels introduced to this area by the Moors. Water-wheels such as this one and the one at La Ñora are a poignant reminder of the importance of water to the development of this area. It is also worth visiting the 17th century sanctuary of the Virgen de la Fuensanta (the city's patron), and the 18th century Hieronymite Monastery, which is known as Murcia's Escorial, located in the Guadalupe district. There are also many archaeological remains, including the castle, fortified palace and Larache fortified palace in Monteagudo, the palaeo-Christian basilica at Algezares or the palaeo-Christian Martiryum at La Alberca.

The King's College of Murcia. 5 min. 3,7 milles from La Nueva Tercia
Click to enlarge The school follows the national Curriculum for England and Wales in the same way that has been established at Kings College, Madrid, which has gained an enviable reputation not only in Spain but in Europe and the wider world for the high quality of education offered to its pupils.

Academic Principles
Sound academic principles underpin the education of children at King’s College and form the basis of a variety of teaching and learning strategies. Approaches are adapted at each stage of a child’s education to take into account changing levels of maturity and knowledge.
Pupils are constantly challenged to strive for excellence in all they undertake, bringing out the best in each individual. While the school is academically demanding, we also place strong emphasis on providing an all-round education. We therefore endeavour to create an atmosphere where human relationships and personal development can progress in harmony.
At different stages of their schooling, pupils are involved in both individual and team work, thereby building their self-confidence and increasing tolerance towards others. They are also encouraged to undertake an active investigational approach to learning, designed to stimulate a questioning mind.
The studies offered are broad and balanced during the earlier years, becoming progressively more specialised during the later stages of Secondary education. This focus, together with the school’s specific efforts to maintain its contacts with the "world outside", means that pupils completing their schooling at King’s College are fully prepared for entry to university and for the eventual choice of a profession.

Academic Organization
The school’s educational programme is based on the English National Curriculum and offers an excellent British education to children from Pre-Nursery to University Entrance.
The curriculum leads to the Cambridge University International G.C.S.E examinations at the end of Year 11 (age 16). These studies are officially recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Education through the process of validation.
In their final two years at King’s College, pupils study for the London University (Edexcel) GCE A Level examinations, leading to university entrance. Students wishing to attend Spanish universities may do so on the strength of their results in (I)GCSE and A Levels.
Throughout their time at the school, pupils receive advice and orientation on their academic choices and career opportunities from our very experienced Careers and University entrance Advisory Department.
Fully qualified British staff teach the English National Curriculum. Spanish language classes for Spanish nationals (including Conocimiento del Medio and Ciencias Sociales) are all given by the school’s qualified Spanish teachers.

Click to enlarge Construction work on Murcia’s new airport is expected to get underway over the next few days.
The £200m project has been earmarked for completion in 2010, and is expected to be up and running during the tail end of that year.
The airport will help cater for the growing number of tourists visiting the region. Data for the existing airport, San Javier, shows that in recent years, the volume of passengers visiting the Spanish region grew from 1,646,129 in 2006 to 2,002,949 in 2007. Growing tourism rates is likely to increase demand for properties for sales in Murcia over the coming years.
The development of the eagerly anticipated Murcia Airport will be excellent for the region as it will ease passenger numbers at the current airport as well as making travel easier and more convenient for both regular visitors and new passengers using the new facilities. Murcia continues to grow in popularity as more and more people come to recognise the area’s attractive scenery, rich history and good value for money and the development of Murcia Airport will only add to this trend.
